There are countless people today who are living far beneath the purpose God created them for—not because they lack ability, but because they have believed lies that were spoken over them years ago.
Since childhood, they have heard words like:
“You’re not good enough.”
“You’ll never amount to anything.”
“You’re not smart enough.”
“You’ll never succeed.”
“No one in your family has ever done that.”
Over time, those words became more than painful memories—they became beliefs. Those beliefs shaped their self-image, limited their dreams, and convinced them to settle for less than God’s best.
But today, God asks a question that has the power to change everything:
“Who told you that?”
Those were the very words God spoke to Adam in the Garden of Eden after sin entered the world (Genesis 3:11). Adam had begun believing something about himself that God had never said. Fear, shame, and insecurity had distorted his identity.
The same thing happens today.
We often place all the blame on the people who spoke those hurtful words—a parent, a teacher, a coach, a friend, or even a spouse. While they may have been the voices we heard, Scripture reveals there is a deeper source behind the lies.
The Bible identifies the devil as “the accuser of our brothers and sisters” (Revelation 12:10). Jesus went even further, saying of Satan, “He is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44).
The enemy understands the potential God has placed inside every believer. He knows the gifts you carry, the calling on your life, and the influence you could have for the Kingdom of God. He knows what you are capable of becoming if you ever discover your true identity in Christ.
That is why he works relentlessly to fill your mind with doubt, fear, insecurity, and condemnation. If he cannot stop God’s purpose for your life, he will try to convince you that you are incapable of fulfilling it.
Sometimes those lies are spoken through people who may not even realize they are being used as instruments of discouragement. Whether intentional or not, the enemy uses negative words to wound the heart, distort our identity, and keep us trapped in a false version of ourselves.
If we never identify the true source of those lies, we can spend an entire lifetime building our identity on words that never came from God.
But God’s opinion has always mattered more than anyone else’s.
Your identity is not determined by your past.
It is not determined by your failures.
It is not determined by your upbringing.
It is not determined by someone’s rejection.
It is not determined by another person’s opinion.
Your identity is determined by the One who created you.
God says you are loved.
God says you are chosen.
God says you are forgiven.
God says you are accepted.
God says you are His workmanship, created for good works (Ephesians 2:10).
God says you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
God says you are more than a conqueror through Christ (Romans 8:37).
The question is no longer, “What have people said about me?”
The question is, “What has God said about me?”
When you begin to believe what God says instead of what people have said, everything changes. Your confidence grows. Your purpose becomes clear. Your faith replaces fear. Your calling becomes stronger than your insecurity.
So today, stop allowing the lies of yesterday to define the life God has called you to live.
Bring every hurt, every label, every accusation, and every negative word to the feet of Jesus. Open His Word and allow Him to redefine you through His truth.
Because the greatest freedom you’ll ever experience comes when God’s voice becomes louder than every other voice you’ve ever heard.
So I ask you one final time: Who told you that?
If the answer wasn’t God, then you don’t have to believe it.
Believe what your Creator says about you—and step boldly into the purpose He has prepared for your life.
